"Then you will be allowed to settle in the region of Goshen, for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians."
This may seem like a simple statement out of the end of Genesis 47, but in many ways it is another example of God's protection and provision for His people. God knew His people would be in Egypt for many years. Had they settled near the Egyptians it is very likely that their cultures would have intertwined and mixed significantly. But God had other plans. He wanted to preserve the nation of Israel, the family of Jacob, even during their captivity. God desired them to be separate, to follow Him whole heartedly, a task very difficult when mixed in with a polytheistic culture. In the same way, God desires us as believers to be separate from our cultural surroundings. We need to stand out as believers of Christ. We are not to be immeresed in the culture of the day, but immeresed in the Lord and sharing that with those around us. God preserved His children in Egypt, and as we lay our lives before Him, He will preserve us in the world today.
